Unearthing Herbal Histories With Digital Archives - Being Human Festival 2025
We are delighted to partner with The University of York and The Girls Club to host a unique opportunity to connect with York's historic Viking Age through an evening of herbal medicine making!
Join us for a FREE engaging hands-on workshop that bridges the worlds of archaeobotany and traditional herbalism. the experience is designed for individuals eager to explore how ancient practices inform modern herbal remedies. Participants will have the opportunity to dive into digital archives and examine collections from the archaeology data service, discovering the historical significance of plant medicine.
Exploring Plant Medicine and Herbal Applications
In our workshop, you will uncover the stories behind various plants and their medicinal uses throughout history. By analysing specific case studies, we will gain insight into the role of herbalism not only as a method of healing but also as a reflection of shared cultural heritage. Community herbalists, Rox and Jaye, will share valuable knowledge on creating and preserving different herbal remedies. You'll learn how to make a winter remedy for colds and flus, infused oils and vinegars, and blend a herbal tea, using techniques passed down through generations.
A Journey Through History and Female Agency
This workshop also emphasizes the hidden stories of female agency within the field of herbalism. Discover how women have historically been the custodians of herbal knowledge, often navigating social barriers to safeguard their traditions. By integrating this perspective into our practices, we acknowledge the importance of preserving these vibrant stories while fostering an appreciation for the natural world around us.
Through this immersive experience, participants will not only learn hands-on skills but will also become part of a larger conversation about the importance of traditional knowledge in contemporary medicine. Join us as we embark on this inspiring journey, steeped in history and enriched by your own personal exploration of herbalism.
